A Chawan, or tea bowl, has been used in traditional tea ceremonies for preparing and drinking tea in Japan as early as the 13th century. A variety of shapes, styles and clay types of chawans have been developed over the years.
The deep sides and wide basin of the Chawan bowl has been intentionally designed to allow for the use the bamboo Chasen whisk and to prevent spilling over the edges.
Our Chawan matcha bowl is beautifully glazed with a natural, rustic finish and an earth-toned color. It is well-balanced and not bottom heavy like mass produced bowls. Drinking matcha from a traditional Chawan matcha bowl is a special and unique experience.
